What it is

## What is dissolved oxygen (DO)?

Dissolved oxygen is the amount of gaseous oxygen present in water, and it is the single most important parameter for aquatic life. Fish, invertebrates, and the aerobic bacteria that break down organic matter all depend on it, so DO is effectively a measure of whether a water body can support life. It enters water from the atmosphere and from photosynthesis by aquatic plants and algae, and is consumed by respiration and by the decomposition of organic matter. Because warm water holds less oxygen than cold, and because biological demand rises in warm, nutrient-rich conditions, DO is under constant pressure exactly when life needs it most.

It is a core parameter in river, lake, coastal, and aquaculture monitoring, and the one whose collapse causes the most dramatic damage.

### Health and operational effects

When dissolved oxygen falls, aquatic organisms suffocate. A DO crash (triggered by an algal bloom dying and decomposing, an organic pollution load, or a hot, still night when photosynthesis stops but respiration continues) can kill fish across a water body within hours. Chronic low oxygen shifts ecosystems toward tolerant, often undesirable species and signals eutrophication and pollution. In aquaculture, dissolved oxygen is the primary kill risk, and in wastewater treatment it is the controlled variable that governs the aerobic biological process.

Because the damage is fast and often nocturnal, DO is the parameter that most rewards continuous monitoring with alarms.

Limits

## Dissolved Oxygen Limit Values

The published values, by averaging period; each links to the standard that sets it.

1-day minimum (warmwater, early life stages)

[**5 mg/L** EPA aquatic life](https://aethair.io/standards/epa_aquatic_life/ "3 mg/L for other life stages; the coldwater criteria are higher (EPA 1986 DO criteria)")

- **EPA aquatic life** 5 mg/L: 3 mg/L for other life stages; the coldwater criteria are higher (EPA 1986 DO criteria)

Dissolved oxygen is reported in mg/L and as percent saturation. Aquatic-life criteria (such as EPA ambient water quality criteria) set minimum concentrations below which aquatic organisms are harmed, often around 4–6 mg/L depending on the water body and the species it must support. Interpret DO against its daily cycle: the meaningful figure is usually the pre-dawn minimum, not the afternoon peak. A minimum approaching the criterion, or a downward trend over successive nights, signals that intervention or aeration may be needed.

How it is measured

## How Dissolved Oxygen Is Measured

Two technologies are used. **Optical (luminescence) sensors** measure how dissolved oxygen quenches the luminescence of a sensor coating; they are stable, low-maintenance, and now the preferred choice for continuous monitoring. Older **electrochemical (membrane) sensors** consume oxygen at an electrode and require more frequent maintenance and stirring. In practice a DO sensor is one channel of a **multiparameter sonde**, reported both as a concentration (mg/L) and as percent saturation, with temperature and salinity compensation since both affect how much oxygen water can hold.

### Placing DO monitoring

Dissolved oxygen is measured in-situ by a sonde at a representative depth and location. Where stratification matters (deep lakes, reservoirs, ponds), profiling or measuring at multiple depths reveals the low-oxygen zones near the bottom. Because the most dangerous DO lows occur before dawn, after a night of respiration without photosynthesis, continuous logging is essential: a daytime spot sample can read healthy while the pre-dawn minimum is lethal. Optical sensors reduce the fouling and calibration burden of long deployments.

Questions

## Dissolved Oxygen FAQ

Why is dissolved oxygen so important?

Because it determines whether water can support life. Fish, invertebrates, and decomposer bacteria all need dissolved oxygen, so a fall in DO suffocates aquatic organisms. A rapid DO crash can cause a mass fish kill within hours, which is why it is the central parameter in aquatic-life and aquaculture monitoring.

When is dissolved oxygen lowest?

Typically just before dawn. Through the night, respiration and decomposition consume oxygen while photosynthesis, which would replenish it, has stopped, so DO falls to a pre-dawn minimum. A daytime sample can look healthy while the overnight low is dangerous, which is why continuous monitoring matters.

What causes a dissolved oxygen crash?

An algal bloom dying and decomposing, a load of organic pollution, or a hot, still night that combines low solubility with high respiration. Warm, nutrient-rich water is especially vulnerable. The result can be a rapid, water-body-wide oxygen collapse that kills fish.

How do I monitor dissolved oxygen?

Deploy a multiparameter sonde with an optical DO sensor, logging continuously with alarms on low values, ideally capturing the pre-dawn minimum. Use the configurator to pair a logger with a sonde covering DO alongside pH, conductivity, turbidity, and temperature for river, lake, or aquaculture monitoring.
