What it is

## What is hydrogen fluoride (HF)?

Hydrogen fluoride is a colorless gas, or a fuming liquid just below room temperature, with a sharp, penetrating odor, and it is one of the most hazardous corrosive gases handled in industry. Dissolved in water it becomes hydrofluoric acid, which is uniquely dangerous because the fluoride ion penetrates tissue and disrupts the body far beyond any surface burn. Hydrogen fluoride is emitted by aluminum smelting (the dominant concern around smelters) and by glass and semiconductor etching, petroleum alkylation, phosphate fertilizer production, and the combustion of some fuels and minerals. Even as a vapor it is acutely toxic and corrosive.

The reach of fluoride beyond the point of contact is what sets HF apart from ordinary acid gases and makes its monitoring a priority wherever it is used.

### Health and operational effects

Hydrogen fluoride causes severe corrosive burns, but its greater danger is systemic: absorbed fluoride binds calcium in the body and can cause dangerously low blood calcium and cardiac effects even from a modest skin or inhalation exposure. Chronic low-level exposure leads to fluorosis, affecting bones and teeth. Around smelters, airborne fluoride damages vegetation and, through contaminated forage, livestock, so the environmental footprint extends well past the fence. This dual character, acute human toxicity and chronic environmental harm, shapes how it is monitored.

For aluminum, semiconductor, refining, and fertilizer operations, hydrogen fluoride is at once an acute life-safety parameter and a fence-line environmental one.

Hydrogen fluoride is reported in ppm for workplace air and in µg/m³ for the lower ambient and fence-line levels. Occupational exposure is judged against limits such as the OSHA PEL and the [ACGIH TLV](https://aethair.io/standards/acgih_tlv/), which includes a ceiling value, while environmental fluoride around smelters is assessed against ambient and vegetation-protection limits; the applicable values appear in the limit table on this page. Because HF is acutely toxic, a short-term or ceiling value often governs, not just a shift average.

How it is measured

## How Hydrogen Fluoride (HF) Is Measured

**Electrochemical sensors** provide ppm-level detection and alarming around HF-handling processes and etch tools. For stack and [fence-line monitoring](https://aethair.io/solutions/perimeter-monitoring/), **tunable-laser and FTIR analyzers** measure HF continuously and specifically, and ion-selective electrodes or colorimetric methods on collected samples give time-averaged environmental figures. Like other acid gases HF is extremely reactive and adsorbs strongly onto surfaces, so heated, inert, and short sample paths are essential. Hydrogen fluoride is measured with the Aethair HF cartridge in Aethair PRO, or with an external professional analyzer connected through Thiamis.

### Placing hydrogen fluoride monitoring

For worker protection, place detectors near HF sources (alkylation units, etch tools, smelter potlines, and acid-handling points) in the breathing zone. For environmental assessment, monitor at the stack and along the downwind fence-line with wind speed and direction, because smelter fluoride affects the surrounding land, crops, and grazing animals. As with all acid gases, keep sample lines short, heated, and inert so the reactive gas is not lost before it is measured.

Questions

## Hydrogen Fluoride (HF) FAQ

Why is hydrogen fluoride so dangerous compared with other acids?

Most acids injure only the surface they touch, but hydrogen fluoride releases fluoride ions that penetrate tissue and act systemically, binding calcium in the body and causing effects on the heart even from a limited exposure. This means a burn that looks minor can be serious, and vapor exposure carries a toxicity beyond simple irritation. That is why HF is treated as exceptionally hazardous.

Where is hydrogen fluoride encountered?

The largest concern is aluminum smelting, which emits fluoride from the reduction process, along with glass and semiconductor etching, petroleum alkylation, and phosphate fertilizer production. Some fuels and minerals also release HF when burned. These industries monitor it for both worker safety and environmental emissions.

Why is hydrogen fluoride monitored at the fence-line?

Airborne fluoride from smelters settles on surrounding vegetation and, through contaminated forage, causes fluorosis in grazing livestock, so the impact extends well beyond the plant boundary. Fence-line and downwind monitoring, read with wind data, shows how much fluoride is reaching the surrounding land. It is an environmental-protection measurement as well as a safety one.

How do I monitor hydrogen fluoride?

Aethair PRO can measure hydrogen fluoride with an Aethair HF cartridge (an electrochemical sensor for area and safety monitoring), and for stack and fence-line work, Thiamis can connect a tunable-laser or FTIR analyzer with heated, inert sampling throughout. This suits aluminum, semiconductor, and refining operations. Use the configurator to combine HF with meteorological data and the other parameters your site needs.
