What it is

## What is ammonia (NH₃)?

Ammonia is a colorless gas with a sharp, pungent, and unmistakable odor, detectable by smell at very low concentrations. It is highly soluble in water and chemically reactive, and it is both a major industrial chemical and a natural product of decomposition. Its dominant sources are agricultural (livestock manure and nitrogen fertilizer application account for most global emissions), alongside refrigeration systems that use anhydrous ammonia as a refrigerant, wastewater treatment, composting, and a range of chemical processes. In the atmosphere ammonia is also a precursor to fine particulate, reacting with acids to form secondary aerosol.

Because the nose detects it long before it reaches dangerous levels, ammonia is as much an odor and nuisance parameter as a safety one, until a large leak turns it into an acute hazard.

### Health and operational effects

Ammonia irritates the eyes, nose, throat, and respiratory tract, and at higher concentrations it is corrosive, causing chemical burns to the airways and eyes and, in a major release, life-threatening injury; concentrated ammonia is also flammable. The low odor threshold gives useful early warning, but people can become desensitized to the smell, so relying on the nose alone is unsafe around large inventories. At low levels, the persistent odor is itself an operational problem, generating complaints around farms, digesters, and wastewater plants.

For cold-storage and food plants, agriculture, and wastewater operators, ammonia is a combined safety, emissions, and odor parameter, backed by occupational limits and refrigeration-safety codes.

Ammonia is reported in ppm. Occupational exposure is judged against workplace limits such as the OSHA PEL and ACGIH TLV, expressed as time-weighted averages with short-term values. Refrigeration installations set their own leak-alarm thresholds for detection and evacuation, and the odor threshold sits well below the health limits. The applicable values appear in the limit table on this page. Because a serious ammonia release is acute, safety monitoring alarms on short-term concentration, not only on averages.

How it is measured

## How Ammonia (NH₃) Is Measured

**Electrochemical sensors** are the common choice for ppm-level detection and alarming in machinery rooms and around processes, producing a current proportional to concentration. **Photoacoustic and infrared analyzers** offer stable, higher-specificity measurement for emissions and research, and higher ranges near refrigeration plants may use dedicated leak detectors. Ammonia is "sticky" (it adsorbs onto surfaces and tubing), so response and recovery times and short, inert sample paths matter. Ammonia is not part of the Aethair PRO cartridge set, so it is measured with an external professional analyzer on a Thiamis gateway.

### Placing ammonia sensors

Around refrigeration plants, place detectors in machinery rooms near compressors and likely leak points, and along escape routes, following the applicable refrigeration-safety standard. In livestock housing, monitor at animal height where emissions arise and animals and workers are exposed. Around wastewater and composting sites, monitor at the boundary with wind speed and direction so odor episodes can be traced to their source. Because ammonia is lighter than air and adsorbs readily, both mounting position and sample-line design affect the reading.

Questions

## Ammonia (NH₃) FAQ

Why does ammonia smell so strong, and is the smell itself harmful?

Ammonia has a very low odor threshold, so it is detectable by smell well below the levels that cause harm. The pungent smell is an early warning rather than proof of danger. However, people can become desensitized to a constant smell, and a large leak can overwhelm the senses, so odor alone is not a safe way to gauge exposure. Continuous detection is needed around significant inventories.

Where is ammonia a serious hazard?

The acute risk is greatest around industrial refrigeration, which uses large quantities of anhydrous ammonia and where a leak in a machinery room can be immediately dangerous. Agriculture and wastewater generate lower, chronic exposures and persistent odor. Each setting monitors ammonia, but for different reasons: acute safety versus exposure and nuisance.

Is there an exposure limit for ammonia?

Yes. Occupational frameworks such as the OSHA PEL and ACGIH TLV set workplace limits with short-term values, and refrigeration-safety codes define leak-alarm thresholds. The odor threshold is lower still, which is why ammonia is usually smelled before it is harmful. The applicable values are listed in the limit table on this page.

How do I monitor ammonia?

Ammonia is not one of the Aethair PRO cartridge gases, so it is measured by connecting an external electrochemical or photoacoustic ammonia analyzer to a Thiamis gateway. For refrigeration safety, it is configured with the alarm thresholds your code requires. For agriculture and wastewater, it is paired with wind data for odor work. Use the configurator to combine ammonia with the other parameters your site needs.
