What it is

## What is ORP?

ORP (oxidation-reduction potential, also called redox potential) is a measure, in millivolts, of the tendency of water to gain or lose electrons: in other words, whether it is chemically oxidizing or reducing. A positive ORP means the water is oxidizing, rich in electron-accepting species such as oxygen, chlorine, or ozone, while a negative ORP means it is reducing, dominated by electron donors such as sulfide, iron, or organic matter. Unlike a single-substance measurement, ORP is an aggregate indicator: it sums the net redox state of everything dissolved in the water into one number. Because it responds to disinfectants and to oxygen depletion alike, ORP complements dissolved oxygen and pH in describing the chemical health of water.

### Health and operational effects

In disinfection, ORP is the practical measure of how effectively water can inactivate pathogens: a sufficiently high oxidizing potential indicates that free chlorine or ozone is present and active, which is why swimming pools, drinking-water plants, and cooling systems control to an ORP setpoint. In wastewater and natural systems, a falling ORP signals the onset of anaerobic conditions, where oxygen is exhausted and reducing reactions produce hydrogen sulfide, ammonium, and dissolved metals, a shift with consequences for odor, corrosion, and aquatic life. In sediments and stagnant water, negative ORP marks the zone where nutrients and metals are released back into the water column.

How it is measured

## How ORP Is Measured

ORP is measured with a combination electrode much like a pH sensor, but with an inert noble-metal sensing surface (usually platinum) that develops a voltage against a reference electrode in proportion to the redox state of the water. It is one channel of a multiparameter sonde connected to a Thiamis gateway, reported directly in millivolts. The platinum surface is easily poisoned or coated, so ORP electrodes drift and require periodic cleaning and checking against a redox standard solution; biofouling and a sluggish reference junction are the usual causes of unreliable readings on a long deployment.

### Placing ORP sensors

ORP is measured in situ by the sonde at a representative point: near a dosing line in a disinfection system, at an outfall, or at mid-depth in a water body. Because ORP reacts quickly to changes in disinfectant dose or to the onset of anaerobic conditions, continuous logging catches excursions that spot sampling would miss, and it is often paired with dissolved oxygen and pH to interpret what the redox change means. As with pH, the electrode benefits from regular cleaning and calibration checks to counter drift and fouling over the deployment.

Questions

## ORP FAQ

What does ORP actually tell me?

ORP summarizes the net oxidizing or reducing tendency of water in a single millivolt reading. A positive value means oxidizing conditions (oxygen or a disinfectant is present and active), while a negative value means reducing, oxygen-depleted conditions. It is a fast, aggregate indicator of chemical state rather than a measurement of any one substance.

Why is ORP used to control disinfection?

ORP reflects how effectively the water can inactivate pathogens, not just how much disinfectant has been added. A high oxidizing potential shows that free chlorine or ozone is present and active, so pools and treatment plants control to an ORP setpoint as a direct measure of disinfection power.

What does a negative ORP mean in a natural water body?

It means the water has turned reducing, or anaerobic: oxygen is exhausted and reactions are producing hydrogen sulfide, ammonium, and dissolved metals. This is usually bad news for aquatic life and for odor and corrosion, and it typically coincides with very low dissolved oxygen.

How do I monitor ORP?

Deploy a multiparameter sonde with a platinum ORP electrode connected to a Thiamis gateway, logging continuously with regular cleaning and calibration checks. Use the configurator to pair a logger with a sonde covering ORP alongside dissolved oxygen, pH, and conductivity for treatment or natural-water monitoring.
