What it is

## What is respirable crystalline silica?

Crystalline silica is one of the most abundant minerals on Earth, the main component of sand, quartz, granite, and most rock. It becomes a serious hazard when materials containing it are cut, ground, drilled, crushed, or blasted, releasing fine dust. The dangerous fraction is **respirable crystalline silica (RCS)**: particles small enough (broadly the sub-4-micron, PM4 range) to be inhaled deep into the lungs. This is the dust generated by concrete cutting, stone fabrication, tunneling, quarrying, foundry work, and sandblasting.

Unlike nuisance dust, RCS causes irreversible disease, which is why it is regulated as a distinct parameter with its own strict exposure limit.

### Health and operational effects

Inhaling respirable crystalline silica over time causes silicosis (progressive, incurable scarring of the lung) and is linked to lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and kidney disease. The disease can develop after years of exposure and continues to progress even after exposure stops. A recent surge in accelerated silicosis among engineered-stone countertop fabricators has pushed regulators worldwide to tighten limits and enforcement.

For employers in construction, stone, mining, and manufacturing, RCS is a frontline compliance and liability issue: exceeding exposure limits triggers mandatory controls, health surveillance, and, increasingly, legal consequences.

Limits

## Respirable Crystalline Silica Limit Values

The published values, by averaging period; each links to the standard that sets it.

8-hour TWA (PEL)

[**50 µg/m³** OSHA silica](https://aethair.io/standards/osha_silica/) [**50 µg/m³** MSHA silica](https://aethair.io/standards/msha_silica/ "full shift")

8-hour TWA (action level)

[**25 µg/m³** OSHA silica](https://aethair.io/standards/osha_silica/) [**25 µg/m³** MSHA silica](https://aethair.io/standards/msha_silica/ "full shift")

- **MSHA silica** 50 µg/m³: full shift
- **MSHA silica** 25 µg/m³: full shift

Respirable crystalline silica is reported as a mass concentration in µg/m³ (or mg/m³), expressed as an 8-hour time-weighted average for occupational compliance. The OSHA permissible exposure limit is 50 µg/m³ as an 8-hour TWA, with an action level of 25 µg/m³ that triggers monitoring and medical surveillance; other jurisdictions set similar or lower values. Because the limit is a time-weighted average, brief peaks must be integrated over the shift. Real-time monitors help by showing which tasks contribute most to the cumulative dose.

How it is measured

## How Respirable Crystalline Silica Is Measured

The reference method for compliance is **gravimetric sampling**: a personal or area pump draws air through a size-selective cyclone that isolates the respirable fraction onto a filter. The filter is then weighed and analyzed in a laboratory (by X-ray diffraction or infrared spectroscopy) to determine the crystalline silica content. This gives a legally defensible time-weighted average but not a live reading. **Real-time respirable-dust monitors** (optical PM4 instruments) provide immediate feedback for controlling dust as work proceeds and for identifying when and where exposure spikes. They are best used alongside, not instead of, gravimetric compliance sampling.

### Placing silica monitoring

Personal sampling places the cyclone and filter in the worker's breathing zone to capture actual exposure. Area and real-time monitors are positioned near dust-generating activities and at the boundary between work and occupied zones to check that controls (water suppression, extraction, enclosure) are working. Because silica exposure is task-driven, monitoring is most useful when tied to specific operations rather than run as a flat background measurement.

Questions

## Respirable Crystalline Silica FAQ

How is respirable silica different from ordinary dust?

Respirable crystalline silica is the fine, crystalline (quartz) fraction of dust that reaches deep into the lungs and causes permanent scarring and cancer. Ordinary "nuisance" dust is larger and less hazardous. Because silica is far more dangerous, it has its own strict exposure limit and requires size-selective, crystalline-specific measurement.

What is the exposure limit for crystalline silica?

The OSHA permissible exposure limit is 50 µg/m³ as an 8-hour time-weighted average, with a 25 µg/m³ action level that triggers monitoring and health surveillance. Many other regulators set comparable or stricter limits, and the trend is downward.

Can a real-time dust monitor replace gravimetric sampling?

No. For legal compliance, gravimetric sampling with laboratory analysis of the crystalline content remains the reference method. Real-time respirable-dust monitors are extremely useful for immediate feedback, controlling dust as work proceeds, and finding which tasks drive exposure, but they complement rather than replace compliance sampling.

How do I monitor silica on a construction or stone site?

Pair a Thiamis gateway with a respirable-dust (PM4) monitor for real-time control and boundary monitoring, alongside gravimetric personal sampling for compliance. Use the configurator to combine respirable dust with PM10, PM2.5, and noise for a full construction or quarrying panel.
