What it is

## What is sulfur dioxide (SO₂)?

Sulfur dioxide is a colorless gas with a sharp, pungent odor, produced by burning fuels that contain sulfur and by certain industrial processes. Its dominant sources are coal and oil combustion in power generation and heavy industry, metal smelting, oil refining, and, at sea, ships burning high-sulfur fuel. In the atmosphere, SO₂ oxidizes to form sulfate particles and contributes to acid rain, so its impact reaches beyond the gas itself into secondary particulate matter and ecosystem damage. It is one of the six ambient criteria pollutants.

Because its sources are concentrated around industry and shipping, SO₂ is especially relevant to monitoring near power plants, refineries, smelters, and ports.

### Health and operational effects

SO₂ irritates the airways and can cause bronchoconstriction, particularly in people with asthma, for whom even short exposures during exercise can trigger symptoms. Longer-term and community exposure is associated with respiratory illness and, through the sulfate particles it forms, with the broader health burden of fine particulate matter. Its environmental effects (acid deposition harming soils, waters, and buildings) drove some of the earliest air-pollution regulation and continue to shape fuel-sulfur limits worldwide.

For industrial operators, port authorities, and regulators, SO₂ is both a directly regulated pollutant and a marker of sulfur-fuel combustion.

TWA

[**2 ppm** NIOSH REL](https://aethair.io/standards/niosh_rel/)

- **EU 2024/2881** 20 µg/m³: new annual limit value (2030)
- **EU 2024/2881** 50 µg/m³: 2030 limit value

SO₂ is reported in ppb or µg/m³ and compared as 1-hour, 24-hour, or annual averages, depending on the framework. The US EPA NAAQS, the WHO 2021 guideline, and the EU's new 2030 limit values (which add an annual limit) all appear in the table on this page, alongside occupational limits for workplace exposure. Because health effects include short-term bronchoconstriction, the short-averaging-period values matter as much as the annual ones, and a high 1-hour reading near a source is the compliance-relevant event.

How it is measured

## How Sulfur Dioxide (SO₂) Is Measured

Reference-grade ambient monitoring uses **UV fluorescence analyzers**, which excite SO₂ molecules with ultraviolet light and measure the fluorescence they emit, a selective, sensitive, and stable method that underpins regulatory networks. For distributed and lower-cost monitoring, **electrochemical sensors** give real-time SO₂ readings but require compensation for temperature, humidity, and cross-sensitivity to other gases, and benefit from co-location against a reference for correction. Around industrial sources, fixed monitors track fence-line concentrations with wind data for source attribution.

### Placing SO₂ sensors

Because SO₂ is source-concentrated, siting is about capturing the impact of specific emitters: fence-line and downwind positions around power plants, refineries, smelters, and ports, at breathing height with an unobstructed intake and wind speed and direction alongside. For ambient network monitoring, standard urban and industrial-area siting gives representative concentrations. Proximity and wind relative to the source strongly shape the reading, so consistent placement matters for trends and attribution.

Questions

## Sulfur Dioxide (SO₂) FAQ

Where does sulfur dioxide come from?

Mainly from burning sulfur-containing fuels: coal and oil in power generation and industry, metal smelting, oil refining, and ships burning high-sulfur marine fuel. Because these sources are concentrated, SO₂ monitoring is especially relevant near power plants, refineries, smelters, and ports.

How is SO₂ linked to particulate matter and acid rain?

In the atmosphere, SO₂ oxidizes into sulfate particles, contributing to secondary fine particulate matter, and it forms sulfuric acid that falls as acid rain, damaging soils, waters, and buildings. So controlling SO₂ yields benefits beyond the gas itself, across both PM2.5 and ecosystem health.

What are the limits for SO₂?

Frameworks set different averaging periods: the US EPA NAAQS uses a 1-hour standard, the WHO 2021 guideline sets short-term values, and the EU 2024 directive adds an annual limit for 2030. Occupational limits also apply for workplace exposure. The limit table on this page lists the applicable values with their averaging periods.

How do I monitor sulfur dioxide?

Aethair PRO measures SO₂ with a gas sensor cartridge, or Thiamis can connect an electrochemical multi-gas monitor or a dedicated SO₂ analyzer, with wind data for source attribution near industry and ports. Regulatory networks use UV-fluorescence reference methods. Use the configurator to combine SO₂ with the other criteria pollutants for an ambient or industrial-boundary station.
