What it is

## What is sound exposure level (SEL)?

Sound exposure level describes a single discrete noise event (an aircraft flyover, a train pass, a blast, a passing motorcycle) by the **total acoustic energy** it delivers, compressed into a notional one-second duration. In effect SEL takes all the energy of an event, however long it actually lasted, and states the constant level that would deliver that same energy in exactly one second. Because it packs the whole event into one second, SEL is always higher than the event's Lmax, and it lets events of different lengths be compared on an equal footing. It is normally A-weighted, written LAE or SEL.

Where Leq averages energy over a fixed clock period and Lmax marks the loudest instant, SEL sums the energy of one event, which is why it is the natural measure for counting and comparing individual occurrences.

### Health and operational effects

Individual loud events drive annoyance and sleep disturbance around airports, railways, blasting operations, and busy roads, and SEL is the metric that captures each event's full acoustic weight rather than just its peak. Because it is additive in energy terms, SEL is the building block from which cumulative day-and-night exposure indices are constructed: summing the SELs of all the events over a period, with any night-time penalty applied, yields the long-period Leq and the day-evening-night descriptors used in aircraft and transport noise policy. This makes SEL central to both assessing single events and building the totals that limits are set against.

For airport and infrastructure operators, SEL is therefore the per-event figure behind community-noise contours, complaint analysis, and the cumulative metrics in their permits.

How it is measured

## How Sound Exposure Level (SEL) Is Measured

SEL is derived by a sound level meter built to the **IEC 61672** standard, which integrates the A-weighted sound energy over the duration of an event and normalizes it to one second. Reliable SEL depends on **event detection**: the instrument must identify the start and end of each event against the background so that only the event's energy is counted. Because this is a full acoustic metric beyond a simple ambient sound reading, it is measured with an external IEC 61672 instrument logged on a Thiamis gateway, reported alongside the anchor metric Leq into which the individual SELs aggregate.

### Placing noise monitors

For event monitoring, the microphone is placed at the affected receptor (under a flight path, beside a rail line, or at a residential boundary) at standard height, clear of reflecting surfaces, and fitted with a windshield. Continuous unattended logging is essential because events occur unpredictably and each must be captured in full, from onset to decay, to compute its SEL correctly. Good separation of the event from the background is easier where the residual level is low, which also informs where and when monitoring is most reliable.

Questions

## Sound Exposure Level (SEL) FAQ

How is SEL different from Leq and Lmax?

Lmax is the loudest instant of an event, Leq is the energy averaged over a fixed clock period, and SEL is the total energy of a single event squeezed into one second. SEL is higher than the event's Lmax and, unlike Leq, describes one event rather than a whole period.

Why normalize to one second?

Normalizing to a common one-second reference lets events of different durations be compared and added together in energy terms. A short sharp event and a long quieter one can then be weighed against each other, and their SELs sum cleanly into cumulative indices.

How does SEL build day-night noise metrics?

Cumulative descriptors are formed by adding the SELs of all events over a period, applying evening and night penalties, and expressing the total as an average level. This is how per-event SELs become the long-period Leq and the day-evening-night contours used in transport-noise policy.

How do I monitor SEL and individual events?

Event metrics such as SEL need an external IEC 61672 sound level meter with event detection on a Thiamis gateway, logging continuously alongside Leq. Use the configurator to combine noise with the other parameters your monitoring program requires.
