What it is

## What is wind speed?

Wind speed is the rate at which air moves horizontally past a point, reported in meters per second (m/s). Wind arises from pressure differences in the atmosphere (air flows from high to low pressure), modified by the Earth's rotation, terrain, and local heating. It is inherently gusty and variable, so a wind-speed measurement is characterized by its mean over an averaging period, its gusts (the short peaks), and its lulls. Together with wind direction it forms the wind vector that governs how anything airborne is carried and diluted.

### Health and operational effects

Wind is a primary driver of both safety and dispersion. High winds threaten cranes, scaffolding, temporary structures, lifting operations, drones, and outdoor events, and most such activities have wind-speed limits at which work must stop. Wind also strips heat from the body, which is the basis of the wind-chill index in cold conditions.

For environmental monitoring, wind speed controls the dispersion of pollutants, dust, odor, and airborne pathogens: strong winds dilute and carry emissions away, while calm conditions let them accumulate near the source. A dust, gas, or odor reading without the accompanying wind is therefore only half the picture. Wind speed and direction are what turn a concentration into a source attribution and feed dispersion models.

How it is measured

## How Wind Speed Is Measured

Two sensor families dominate. **Mechanical cup or propeller anemometers** spin at a rate proportional to wind speed; they are simple, proven, and inexpensive, but have moving parts that wear, a small starting threshold below which they under-read, and inertia that softens gusts. **Ultrasonic (sonic) anemometers** measure the time ultrasound pulses take to travel between fixed transducers and derive both speed and direction from the difference; they have no moving parts, respond instantly, capture gusts faithfully, and often report direction in the same unit, at higher cost. Sonic instruments are increasingly the standard for monitoring, with heated versions for icing climates.

### Placing wind speed sensors

Exposure is everything. Site the anemometer in the open at the standard reference height of 10 meters for meteorological comparability, well clear of buildings, trees, and other obstructions. The accepted guidance is a horizontal distance of at least ten times the height of any nearby obstacle. Obstructions create turbulence, shelter, and speed-up effects that make a poorly sited reading meaningless. Where the aim is site-specific rather than reference measurement, for example wind at working height on a structure, the height is chosen to match the operation, but the same principle of unobstructed exposure applies.

Questions

## Wind Speed FAQ

What is the difference between mean wind speed and gusts?

Mean wind speed is the average over a set period, typically ten minutes, while a gust is a brief peak, usually a two- to three-second maximum, that can be substantially higher. Safety limits are generally written against gusts because it is the sudden peak that causes structural failure, so both values are reported together.

Why is wind measured at 10 meters?

Ten meters above open ground is the international meteorological reference height, chosen to be above most surface friction and local obstacles so that readings from different sites can be compared. Measurements at other heights are converted using a wind profile, but the 10 m standard is what most guidance and models assume.

How does wind speed affect pollution and dust?

Wind dilutes and disperses emissions, so higher wind speeds generally lower ground-level concentrations by mixing and carrying pollutants away, while calm conditions let them build up. This is why wind data is essential context for any dust or gas monitoring: the same source produces very different readings depending on the wind.

How do I monitor wind speed?

Wind is not part of the built-in Aethair sensor set, so pair a Thiamis gateway with an external cup or ultrasonic anemometer, mounted with proper exposure, for continuous wind-speed logging. Use the configurator to combine wind speed with wind direction, dust, and gases so that concentrations can be interpreted against the wind that drives their dispersion.
