On connection it sends the WRD command; the station returns a model byte that the driver maps to a name (Wizard III/II, Monitor, Perception, GroWeather, Energy, Health, Vantage Pro2, or Vantage Vue). It then polls the LOOP command for live readings. What do the legacy Davis consoles measure, and how do they differ from the Vantage Pro2 / Vantage Vue? The legacy consoles use the older Davis loop packet, and their sensors vary by model. The Weather Wizard III/II report temperature and wind, plus optional rainfall. The Weather Monitor II adds humidity and a barometer. The Perception II is an indoor console for temperature, humidity, and barometric pressure. The GroWeather, EnergyMonitor, and HealthEnviroMonitor add solar radiation, and the GroWeather also has soil and leaf channels. The Vantage Pro2 and Vantage Vue use the newer LOOP packet, which also reports computed dew point, heat index, and wind chill; the Vantage Pro2 Plus adds solar radiation. Soil and leaf channels come only from the legacy GroWeather/EnviroMonitor packet. Does each unit actually report every listed measurement? The driver reads the full field set defined by the station’s packet format and discards any field the unit does not populate (Davis sends a 0xFF sentinel for absent sensors). So a station reports only its fitted sensors even though the packet defines extra temperature/humidity, soil, and leaf slots. Are readings available in both metric and imperial units? Yes. Every temperature, pressure, wind, and rain field is stored in metric (°C, hPa, m/s, mm) and, when the station is configured for US units, additionally in imperial (°F, inHg, mph, in).
