# CARB Indoor Air Cleaning Device Regulation (17 CCR §94800–94810)

Indoor: ozone emitted by air cleaning devices (California)

The California Air Resources Board regulation on indoor air cleaning devices, **17 CCR §94800 et seq.**, limits the ozone that air cleaners may produce. Since 2010, any indoor air cleaning device manufactured for use, sold, or supplied in California must be **certified by CARB to produce an ozone emission concentration not exceeding 0.050 ppm**, tested under the regulation's procedure, and labeled accordingly. It covers ionizers, electrostatic precipitators, photocatalytic oxidation and UV devices, and corona discharge generators; intentional ozone generators marketed as air purifiers cannot be certified.

Limit values

## CARB Air Cleaner Limit Values

Every value California Air Resources Board publishes for the parameter below, with its averaging period, as the standard states it.

**0.05 ppm** *Certified emission concentration* tested per section 94805; devices sold in California must be certified

Who it applies to

## Who It Applies to

Manufacturers, distributors, and retailers of indoor air cleaning devices sold in or shipped to California, and indirectly every building owner choosing an air cleaner there. Certified devices are listed by CARB.

Monitoring

## How Monitoring Relates to It

The limit is a certification test of the device, not an indoor air limit, so a room reading is not a compliance test. Measuring ozone in the space still shows whether an air cleaner, a printer, or outdoor infiltration is adding ozone, and whether indoor levels stay low against the occupational and indoor guidance values.

How much of this standard one Aethair monitor covers, followed by the third-party instruments in the sensor catalog that measure its parameters. Each connects to Environet through a Thiamis gateway, which adds whatever the monitor leaves out.

Questions

## CARB Air Cleaner FAQ

What ozone limit does CARB set for air cleaners?

An ozone emission concentration of no more than 0.050 ppm, verified by CARB certification testing before the device can be sold in California.

Which devices does the CARB regulation cover?

Indoor air cleaning devices including ionizers, electrostatic precipitators, photocatalytic oxidation and UV devices, and corona discharge generators.

Is the CARB limit an indoor air standard?

No. It is a device certification limit on emissions, not a limit on ozone in a room.
