EN 12341: gravimetric PM reference method

EN 12341 is the European standard that defines the reference method for measuring particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5) in ambient air by gravimetry. The method draws a defined volume of air through a size-selective inlet so that only particles below the target cut-off reach a filter, weighs that filter before and after sampling under controlled temperature and humidity, and derives the mass concentration from the difference in weight divided by the volume sampled. The standard specifies the sampler design, the inlet, the filter handling, and the conditioning and weighing procedure so that results are consistent across Europe.

The standard

What EN 12341 Is

Published by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN), EN 12341 is the benchmark against which all other PM measurement methods in Europe are judged. It defines what a "true" PM concentration is for regulatory purposes under the EU air-quality directives.

Who uses it

Who Uses It

National and regional air-quality authorities operate EN 12341 reference samplers in their monitoring networks to produce the definitive PM data used for compliance with EU limit values. Instrument manufacturers use the standard as the reference their continuous monitors must be shown equivalent to, and laboratories, consultants, and researchers use it wherever PM data must be legally defensible. Because the gravimetric method is the agreed truth for PM, anyone deploying a faster automatic monitor ultimately relies on EN 12341 as the yardstick.

Monitoring

How It Relates to Monitoring

Gravimetric sampling to EN 12341 is accurate but slow and labor-intensive: filters must be conditioned, weighed, and changed manually, giving one figure per sampling period rather than a live reading. For continuous data, networks use automatic monitors (such as beta-attenuation or optical instruments) that have been demonstrated equivalent to the reference method, so their readings can be compared against the ambient limit values with the same authority. EN 12341 is therefore the anchor: the reference method establishes the true concentration, and every continuous PM monitor earns its regulatory standing by being shown equivalent to it. A monitoring program often runs the reference sampler and continuous monitors together, using the gravimetric data to verify and correct the automatic instruments.

Questions

EN 12341 FAQ

Why is gravimetry treated as the reference for PM?

Weighing collected particles directly measures their mass, which is exactly how the PM10 and PM2.5 limits are defined, with no assumptions about particle composition or optical behavior. That directness makes it the agreed truth against which faster, indirect methods are validated.

If gravimetry is the reference, why use continuous monitors at all?

The gravimetric method yields only one averaged figure per filter and requires manual conditioning and weighing, so it cannot show how concentrations change through the day. Continuous automatic monitors give real-time data for public information and source analysis, and once demonstrated equivalent to EN 12341 they carry regulatory weight too.

What does "equivalent method" mean here?

It means an automatic monitor has been tested against the EN 12341 reference sampler and shown to produce results within defined limits of agreement. Once equivalence is demonstrated, the continuous instrument's data can be used for compliance in place of the manual reference method.

How do I build a PM monitoring setup?

Pair a continuous particulate monitor for real-time PM10 and PM2.5 with periodic gravimetric reference sampling to verify and correct it where regulatory-grade data is needed. Use the configurator to build a particulate station and combine it with meteorology for source analysis.
