Specialty Air Analyzers

AethLabs microAeth MA-series aethalometers (the wearable MA200, portable MA350, and rack-mount MA600) measure black carbon optically on a filter tape at five wavelengths (UV 375 nm, Blue 470 nm, Green 528 nm, Red 625 nm, IR 880 nm), with DualSpot loading compensation. The 880 nm channel reports black carbon (BC) and the 375 nm channel reports UVPM, a biomass and woodsmoke marker. Together the five wavelengths support source apportionment between biomass burning and fossil fuel (BCc WB, BCc FF, Delta-C, and BB %). Also logs sample flow, temperature, and RH.

ModelDescriptionMeasures & specs
MA200Wearable 5-wavelength (UV–IR) black-carbon aethalometer; 17-position filter tape (MAFT-L17), DualSpot loading compensation, internal pump (50–170 mL/min), onboard GPS, accelerometer, RH/temperature, and barometer.
MA3005-wavelength black-carbon aethalometer; 85-position PTFE filter tape cartridge (MAFT-L85), DualSpot. Superseded: no longer in the current AethLabs lineup (the MA350 carries its 85-position tape forward).
MA350Flagship portable 5-wavelength black-carbon aethalometer; 85-position PTFE filter tape, DualSpot, higher flow (to 170 mL/min) for lower noise. Developed for the US EPA RFP.
MA600Rack-mount 5-wavelength (UV–VIS–IR) black-carbon aethalometer for fixed sites, mobile vehicles, and labs; 85-position filter tape (continuous sampling up to ~1 year), DualSpot source apportionment, the same measurement engine and data record as the MA200/MA350.

Questions

AethLabs microAeth FAQ

What do the five wavelengths measure?

The MA-series records optical absorption at 375 nm (UV), 470 nm (Blue), 528 nm (Green), 625 nm (Red), and 880 nm (IR). The 880 nm channel is reported as Black Carbon (BC); the 375 nm UV channel (UVPM) is sensitive to biomass and woodsmoke aerosol. Comparing the wavelengths (the Absorption Ångström Exponent) lets the instrument split black carbon into fossil-fuel and biomass-burning components. Each wavelength's compensated concentration is carried as a channel of the Black Carbon parameter.

What is DualSpot and what does the compensated 'BCc' value mean?

DualSpot collects aerosol on two spots at different accumulation rates at the same time. Comparing the two corrects the non-linear filter-loading artifact in real time. The integration ingests the loading-compensated value (BCc) at each wavelength rather than the raw, uncompensated BC1/BC2 spot values.

What source-apportionment outputs does it produce?

From the multi-wavelength spectrum the instrument derives biomass-burning black carbon (BCc WB), fossil-fuel black carbon (BCc FF), Delta-C (the UV-minus-IR difference, a woodsmoke marker), and the biomass-burning percentage (BB %). These all report against the Black Carbon parameter; BB % is the percentage figure.

Which environmental sensors are recorded, and is dew point measured?

The driver ingests the sample flow (total pump flow in mL/min), the sample temperature, and the sample relative humidity. The instrument also computes sample dew point onboard. That output is supported but not currently in the integration's poll list; it can be enabled on request or derived from sample temperature and RH. The internal barometric pressure and the tape/pump diagnostics are not ingested.

How do the models differ?

All MA-series models share the same five-wavelength measurement engine and data record. The MA200 is a wearable unit with a 17-position filter tape. The MA300 (superseded) and MA350 use an 85-position PTFE tape, and the MA350 runs a higher flow for lower noise. The MA600 is a rack-mount version for fixed sites, vehicles, and labs. AethLabs' AL30/AL80 low-cost monitors and the older single-wavelength AE51 are separate products, not read by this driver.

How does the integration read the instrument?

Over a USB-to-serial link at 115200 baud, the driver polls the instrument's data record each interval and parses the comma-separated fields. It auto-detects the model from the instrument's 'MA<model>-<serial>' identifier, so one driver serves the MA200, MA300, MA350, and MA600.
