What it is

What is totalized volume?

Totalized volume is the cumulative amount of water or fluid that has passed a point over time: the running total obtained by integrating the flow rate. Where flow answers "how much is moving right now," volume answers "how much has moved altogether." It is reported in cubic meters, liters, or megaliters depending on the setting, so it carries no single fixed unit. It is an accumulating figure: a totalizer only counts up unless deliberately reset for a new accounting period. The difference between two readings gives the volume that passed between them. Volume is the time-integral of flow, just as flow is the rate of change of volume.

Because permits, bills, and water balances are ultimately settled in total quantities rather than instantaneous rates, totalized volume is the figure that closes the account.

Most of the commercial and regulatory framework around water is written in volumes. Water withdrawal and discharge permits frequently cap the total that may be taken or released over a day, a month, or a year. Water supply and trade effluent are billed on volume, and a watershed or site water balance (inputs against outputs and storage) is a volume calculation. Leakage and losses show up as an unexplained gap between volumes measured at different points. A flow rate matters moment to moment, but it is the accumulated volume that determines compliance and cost.

For utilities, water users, dischargers, and auditors, totalized volume is therefore the settlement figure, and its reliability rests on the quality of the flow measurement feeding it.

How it is measured

How Volume (totalized) Is Measured

Totalized volume is obtained by integrating flow over time. The Thiamis gateway accumulates the measured flow rate from the connected sensor, so any flow-measurement method (weir or flume level, area-velocity, electromagnetic or ultrasonic pipe meter) can drive a running total. Alternatively, the totalizer reading of a flow meter that computes volume internally is logged directly. Because volume simply accumulates the flow, its accuracy is inherited entirely from the flow measurement and its timebase. A small persistent flow error becomes a large volume error over a permit period, so the underlying flow sensor's calibration matters most.

Placing volume measurement

Volume is not separately sited. It is computed at the point where flow is measured, so the placement considerations are those of the flow sensor: a straight, well-conditioned reach or pipe run, correct installation of any weir or flume, and freedom from silt, debris, and trapped air. What volume adds is the need for continuity: because it is cumulative, gaps in the flow record leave gaps in the total, so reliable power, logging, and data recovery matter more for a defensible volume than for a spot flow reading. The totalizer's reset schedule is set to match the accounting period.

Questions

Volume (totalized) FAQ

What is the difference between flow and volume?

Flow is the rate at which fluid moves, per unit time, while volume is the total amount that has passed, accumulated over time. Flow is instantaneous; volume is its integral, so the volume between two moments is the flow summed over the interval between them.

How is totalized volume calculated?

The logger integrates the measured flow rate over time, adding each interval's contribution to a running total, or it reads the totalizer of a meter that computes volume internally. Because it accumulates the flow, the total is only as accurate as the flow measurement and timebase behind it.

Why do permits use volume rather than flow?

Because the resource impact and the commercial value lie in the total quantity taken or discharged over a period, not the instantaneous rate. A high flow for a short time and a low flow for a long time can deliver the same volume, so caps and bills are written in total volumes.

How do I monitor totalized volume?

Pair a Thiamis gateway with your chosen flow sensor and let it integrate flow into a running total, with reliable logging so the record has no gaps. Use the configurator to combine totalized volume with flow, velocity, and water level for a complete hydraulic and compliance station.
