Water Level & Flow

Van Essen Diver submersible groundwater dataloggers: self-contained water-column pressure + temperature loggers, barometrically compensated via a companion Baro-Diver, with conductivity added on the CTD-Diver. Zirconia-ceramic models (Cera/CTD) resist brackish- and seawater corrosion. Read over SDI-12.

Mini-DiverBasic groundwater datalogger: water-column pressure (for level) and temperature. 316L stainless steel, Ø22 mm; fixed-interval logging, 24,000-reading memory. Not for seawater.
Cera-DiverZirconia-ceramic Ø22 mm pressure and temperature logger for brackish, salt, and other aggressive water; 48,000-reading memory.
Micro-DiverSmallest Diver: Ø18 mm 316L stainless steel for wells/pipes ≥20 mm, logging water-column pressure and temperature with event, pump-test, and averaging modes; 48,000-reading memory. Not for seawater.
CTD-DiverCeramic Diver that adds a 4-electrode conductivity cell (0–120 mS/cm, true or specific conductance) to water-column pressure and temperature; for brackish/seawater and aggressive environments; 48,000-reading memory.

Questions

Van Essen Instruments Diver DCX FAQ

Does a Diver measure water level or water pressure?

Each Diver logs absolute water-column pressure (in cmH₂O) and temperature; the CTD-Diver also logs conductivity. Groundwater level is not stored directly. It is derived from the pressure by subtracting barometric pressure in Van Essen's Diver-Office software, so this integration ingests pressure rather than a computed level.

Why is a separate Baro-Diver needed?

A Diver measures absolute pressure, so it also senses the atmosphere pushing on the water surface. One Baro-Diver per site, at roughly the same elevation and within about 15 km, records barometric pressure so the software can compensate and recover the true water column. The Baro-Diver is a barometric reference and is not one of this driver's models.

Which Diver models can be used in seawater?

Not the Mini-Diver or Micro-Diver: their 316L stainless-steel housings corrode in brackish and salt water. The Cera-Diver and CTD-Diver use a zirconia-ceramic housing built for brackish, salt, and other aggressive environments.

What conductivity does the CTD-Diver report?

Its 4-electrode measuring cell (range 0–120 mS/cm) can be programmed to report either true conductivity at the sample temperature or specific conductance referenced to 25 °C (temperature coefficient 1.91 %/°C). Typical waters: tap 0.2–0.7, groundwater 2–20, seawater 50–80 mS/cm.

How does the Thiamis integration read a Diver?

Over SDI-12 (1200 baud, 7 data bits, even parity). An I-command returns the model, firmware, serial number, and battery percentage; an M-command then returns the measured values: pressure and temperature, plus conductivity on the CTD-Diver.
