Water Quality Sondes

Eureka (Solinst) Manta+ multiparameter water-quality sondes: configurable sensor sets for temperature, pH, ORP, conductivity (salinity/TDS), optical dissolved oxygen, turbidity, depth/level, and barometric pressure, plus Turner fluorometers (chlorophyll, CDOM/fDOM, rhodamine, crude oil, fluorescein, tryptophan, optical brighteners), ISEs (chloride, ammonium/ammonia, nitrate), and dissolved CO₂. Read over Eureka's Manta ASCII protocol, so the parameter set follows whichever sensors are fitted.

ModelDescriptionMeasures & specs
Manta+ 20Compact 1.95 in sonde (up to 6 sensors) for spot-checks and monitoring: temperature, pH, optical dissolved oxygen, and conductivity (with salinity/TDS), plus optional ORP and depth. No turbidity, fluorometer, or ISE bay.
Manta+ 252.45 in sonde (up to 6 sensors): the +20 core with one wipered slot that takes turbidity, optical DO, or a single Turner fluorometer (chlorophyll, CDOM/fDOM, or a rhodamine/crude-oil/fluorescein/tryptophan/optical-brightener dye tracer). Optional ORP and depth; no ISE bay.
Manta+ 302.95 in sonde (up to 7 sensors; 30A/30B): wipered turbidity, temperature, pH, optical DO, and conductivity, optional ORP/depth and Turner fluorometers, with one ISE bay on the 30B (chloride, ammonium with derived ammonia, or nitrate). ISE depth limited to ~15 m.
Manta+ 353.5 in full-suite sonde (up to 11 sensors; 35A: 2 fluorometers + 2 ISEs, 35B: 3 fluorometers): the complete core suite plus Turner fluorometers, chloride/ammonium/nitrate ISEs, dissolved CO₂, barometric pressure, and depth, with a universal wiper.
Manta+ F35Anti-fouling +35: the same 3.5 in, up-to-11-sensor suite fitted with a copper nose-cone and universal wiper for extended deployments in fouling-prone water.
Manta+ 40Largest Manta (4.0 in, up to 13 sensors): hosts up to three Turner fluorometers plus three ISEs alongside the full core suite, dissolved CO₂, barometric pressure, and depth.
TrimeterSingle-sensor probe (1.95 in): hosts any one sensor from the Manta range (turbidity, optical DO, pH/ORP, a Turner fluorometer, or an ISE) plus optional temperature and depth. Read over the same Manta protocol, one parameter at a time.
EasyProbe 20Fixed-configuration, budget member of the Manta family (1.95 in): temperature, optical dissolved oxygen, conductivity (with salinity/TDS), and pH, over SDI-12/Modbus/RS-232.
EasyProbe 30EasyProbe 20 plus a turbidity sensor (2.95 in), with an optional internal logging battery pack.

Questions

Eureka Water Probes Manta2 FAQ

How does the integration read a Manta, and why does the parameter list depend on the individual sonde?

The Thiamis Manta driver speaks Eureka's Manta ASCII protocol over RS-232 (19200 8-N-1). Each interval it asks the sonde for its header row, matches every column by name against a fixed table, then reads the data row positionally. It therefore ingests exactly the sensors configured on that particular sonde. The parameter set is per-unit, not fixed per model.

Which Eureka Manta sensors can this integration not read?

Because columns are matched by name, several real Eureka sensors have no entry in the driver and are silently dropped: blue-green algae (phycocyanin/phycoerythrin), the refined-oil and PTSA fluorometers, the sodium, calcium, and bromide ISEs, Total Dissolved Gas (TDG), PAR, and transmissivity. If one of these is fitted, its column is ignored; only the parameters listed here are ingested.

Is the pressure reading water pressure or barometric pressure?

Barometric. The Manta reports barometric pressure in mm Hg from its internal barometer (used to compensate vented depth and TDG). Water depth is reported separately as Depth, Vented Depth, or Stage (m/ft/psig), which map to Water Level.

Why is channel 31 chloride when older screens showed blue-green algae?

Backend channel 31 is wired to the chloride ISE (the sonde's Cl column, mg/L); an earlier platform label read it as 'BG' in cells/mL, which was a mislabel and has been corrected to Chloride. No blue-green-algae column exists in the driver, so BGA is never ingested regardless of the sensor fitted.

How are ammonium and ammonia reported?

The ISE senses ammonium (NH4+, mg/L-N). The Manta software computes un-ionized ammonia (NH3, mg/L-N) from pH, conductivity, and temperature, and also total ammonia (NH3 + NH4). Both ammonia figures map to the Ammonia parameter.

Why do pH and CO₂ appear in millivolts?

The integration ingests the raw electrode signals: pH as both pH units and electrode mV, and dissolved CO₂ as raw mV. The CO₂ sensor's ppm conversion is done on the standalone display and is not sent over this protocol.
