Lufft Weather Stations

Lufft WS-series compact all-in-one weather sensors (UMB over RS485). One maintenance-free housing combines a model-dependent subset of air temperature, humidity, barometric pressure, ultrasonic wind, radar or rain-gauge precipitation, and global radiation; the WS800 adds lightning detection.

ModelDescriptionMeasures & specs
WS100Radar-only precipitation sensor (24 GHz Doppler): precipitation quantity, type, and intensity. No thermo-hygrometer. The rain-focused member of the WS family.
WS200Ultrasonic wind speed and direction with an integrated electronic compass; no temperature, humidity, or pressure.
WS300Thermo-hygrometer-barometer: air temperature, relative humidity, and barometric pressure (dew point and wet bulb calculated).
WS301WS300 (temperature, humidity, pressure) plus global radiation from a built-in pyranometer.
WS302WS300 plus global radiation; shares the WS301 measurement set.
WS303WS300 plus global radiation; shares the WS301 measurement set. Discontinued, still field-supported.

WS510Compact WS500 plus global radiation; shares the WS501 measurement set.
WS600Full compact station: temperature, humidity, pressure, ultrasonic wind, and radar precipitation.
WS601WS600 layout with rain-gauge (not radar) precipitation for low-power use.
WS700All-in-one: temperature, humidity, pressure, ultrasonic wind, radar precipitation, and global radiation.
WS800WS700 parameters plus lightning detection (lightning is reported by the device but not currently ingested by the integration).

Questions

Lufft Weather Stations FAQ

How does the Thiamis integration read a Lufft WS sensor?

Over RS485 using Lufft's UMB binary protocol. The driver auto-detects the connected model from its device-ID string, queries the device's available channel list, then polls those channels each interval, so any WS-family model works without per-model configuration.

How do the WS models differ?

They share one maintenance-free housing but differ by sensor fit. WS200 is wind-only (ultrasonic plus electronic compass); WS100 is precipitation-only (radar). WS300 measures temperature, humidity, and pressure; WS400 adds radar precipitation, WS500 adds ultrasonic wind, WS600 adds both; WS700 adds global radiation and WS800 adds lightning. The x01–x10 variants (e.g. WS301, WS501) add a global-radiation pyranometer to the base model.

Radar or rain gauge for precipitation?

Most precipitation models (WS100, WS400, WS600, WS700, WS800) use a 24 GHz Doppler radar that derives quantity, type, and intensity by correlating drop size and speed. WS401 and WS601 instead use an unheated tipping-bucket rain gauge, recommended for low-power installations. Radar precipitation models are subject to country-specific radio approvals.

Is wet-bulb temperature reported?

Wet-bulb temperature is a supported UMB channel (114/119) that every temperature/humidity/pressure model calculates, and it is listed here as a device capability. The current Thiamis firmware does not poll it by default, but it can be added to the request list on demand without any hardware change.

Is the WS800's lightning data available?

The WS800 detects lightning by analyzing the radio emissions of strikes and reports a strike count over UMB. The current Thiamis driver does not ingest the lightning channel, so it is noted on the WS800 but is not among the delivered parameters.

What does the electronic compass do?

Wind models carry an electronic compass used to verify the housing's north–south alignment and to output a compass-corrected wind direction; it is not reported as a separate measurement.
