Particulate & Dust Monitors

TSI DustTrak real-time light-scattering laser photometers for aerosol/dust mass-concentration monitoring. DustTrak II reports one user-selected size fraction; DustTrak DRX reports PM1/PM2.5/PM4/PM10/Total simultaneously; Environmental models (8540/8543) add a weatherproof enclosure for outdoor/fence-line use, and the M variants add MCERTS certification.

TSI DustTrak FAQ

How does the DustTrak measure dust concentration?

It is a light-scattering laser photometer: the aerosol is drawn through a sheath-air optics chamber and the 90-degree light scattered from a laser diode is converted to a real-time mass concentration in mg/m3. A user-inserted 37 mm gravimetric filter cassette lets you collect a reference sample for custom (gravimetric) calibration.

What is the difference between DustTrak II and DustTrak DRX?

DustTrak II (8530, 8530EP, 8532) is single-channel: it reports one user-selected size fraction, set by the inlet impactor (PM1, PM2.5, Respirable/PM4, or PM10), as a single mass concentration. DustTrak DRX (8533, 8533EP, 8534, and the Environmental 8543/8543M) uses a size-segregated technique to report PM1, PM2.5, PM4 (Respirable), PM10, and Total PM simultaneously from one sample.

What do the EP models add?

EP (8530EP, 8533EP) is a desktop unit with a low-power external pump for continuous, unattended 24/7 monitoring over days to months. The standard desktop (8530, 8533) uses an internal pump suited to shorter work-shift or indoor-air-quality sampling.

What do the M models add, and which fraction is each certified for?

The M models are the MCERTS-certified DustTrak Environmental builds for UK/EU regulatory use, in a weatherproof enclosure with built-in auto-zero. 8540M is certified for PM2.5, 8542M for PM10, and 8543M is the DRX build certified for both PM2.5 and PM10.

Does the integration report a Short-Term Exposure Limit (STEL)?

Yes. The driver supports a 15-minute STEL alarm per size fraction (PM1, PM2.5, PM4, PM10, Total); when a per-fraction setpoint is exceeded it posts the 15-minute average. STEL is an alarm value, not a separately measured parameter.

How does the Thiamis integration talk to the instrument?

Over RS-232 serial at 9600 baud, 8-N-1. On connection the driver auto-detects the model and polls the instrument each interval; the model determines whether one mass value (single-fraction) or five (DRX) are ingested.
